SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK

It had been so strange, when he first stepped out of the machine, a sort of steam pouring out as he took his first, tentative footfalls back onto the golden floors of the ship. "Eureka!" Roxy-- he believed that was her name, anyway-- cheered, stumbling back a bit into the other Lalonde, Rose, he supposed. He didn't have much time to think on it, because only seconds after he was pouncegreeted to the floor by his rambunctious moirail. She was older now, but then, he'd known that before he'd even stepped in-- she had gone before him after all. No longer was she miniscule and pudgy-- well, she was still, a little bit, but what had once been fat was now muscle, and her increased strength when pouncing was noticable to him right away. Her hair was longer too, and it certainly gave her the jungle-girl look. He wanted desperately to grab a brush and detangle the wild mass.

"Equius, you're so tall now!" She mewled, and, well, he had to take her word for it, because he hadn't really gotten much of a look around before she'd tackled him.

"Nepeta, please, this floor is absolutely filthy," He said with a cringe, but she just giggled and nuzzled him once more before returning to her feet and helping him up so he could focus on brushing off all the imaginary dirt.

"How does it feel?" Aradia asked, and he jumped a bit, because he hadn't really expected her to stick around for the procedure(everyone else had gone before him, and there had been no problems, so there was no actual reason for her to stay). "To be alive again," she clarified, after he failed ot answer her right off. "Nothing seems off?"

"Not that I'm aware of," He mused, reaching up to feel his broken horn. It was still broken, but a bit smoother around the points than it had been when he'd died. Had that machine really taken horn erosion into the aging equation? He felt his other once, and it certainly was taller. Nepetas looked bigger and fuller as well. "Should I be on the lookout for side affects?"

"To be safe," she affirmed with a nod, and he returned the motion. She was talking to him civility, something that had only happened in the game out of necessity, and even then it had the occasional endearment, or sarcastic sting to it that was common in vacillating quadrant confusion. All things considered, he should have been a bit more anxious than he was. "But I doubt anything will actually happen-- the both of you are stronger than most in physicality alone, and not even Tavros had any troub--"

She was cut off effectively by Karkat stepping through the threshold of the laboratory, a clipboard in hand. "Aradia, a moment," He said, voice gravely like always, but a lot softer and business-like then was usual. He was still miniscule, but he definitely had a more leaderly air about him. He didn't even seem to care that his eyes were bright red and full. "Roughly half of our troop is working on construction and clearing out land for buildings. Strider returned from scouting only to steal English and Egbert. We ran into a bit of a hitch, so Terezi joined the search team, and Harley defaulted to the work crew to help clear it out, so if you're done with your time bullshit, it'd be great for you to get out there and either find out what Strider's up to, or help the work crew," Aradia pursed her lips, her eyebrows worrying together.

"Any word on Sollux?" She asked, but Karkat just shook his head, concern crossing his features, and Equius felt uneasy.

"What's wrong with Sollux?" Nepeta inquired, her head tilting as it usually did. Karkat just shook his head, tisking as a mildly annoyed look crossed his features. "He's just being an evasive fucking tool, as usual," He placed a hand on Aradia's shoulder, a lot more comfortable with outward signs of affection then Equius ever remembered him being. "Look, I'm sure he'll turn up soon, he's gotta show up sooner or later, right?"

"I just wish he'd come out of hiding," Aradia sighed, hands coming up to massage the bridge of her nose. "All this difficulty is giving me an ulcer,"

"Are you sure that's difficulty and not just Sollux?" He asked with a quirked eyebrow, and Aradia laughed, apparently comforted by the semi-derogatory joke. He glanced at Nepeta to se if she caught it, but she was focused on them as if something ground breaking has just occurred. Equius got a bit weary. She looked about ready to update her shipping wall. Or argue with herself over the sort of updates should take place. Or drag him into said argument.

Karkat glanced up over at him and took a breath before turning to the both of them. "Welcome back to the world of the living. Your guide is outside carrying large rocks to the foundation site of where we will be building our hives, and cannot be here to sell you disgusting, sweep old bottles of blood disguised as some sort of fucking miracle potions for outrageous amounts of grist. Since this is your first day back, and Feferi insists on being insufferable, you get the day off to aclimate to your surroundings, and generally be a hindrance to the rest of us who are tryingot get actual work done. Tomorrow I'll get you started either working, or searching for Sir Sollux I-Cant-Be-Bothered-To-Lift-A-Fucking-Finger-Lest-It's-In-Some-Vague-Attempt-To-Prove-Just-How-Much-More-I-Hate-Meself-Than-Karkat Captor,"

"I'm pretty sure he's not doing it to prove his self-loathing is stronger than yours, Karkat," Aradia chimed in.

"It's pretty much the premise of our entire relationship," Karkat deadpanned.

"So Captor is being uncooperative?" Equius asked with a raised eyebrow. Karkat massaged his eyes, allowing Aradia to take over.

"The day of our arrival to this planet he went missing," Her fingers took a strand of her hair and started to worry the folicals between the digits. It was an unconscious act of nervousness, one of several she'd owned, that he'd found both disgusting and endearing in his youth. The act held no such meaning now. "That was almost a month ago. We haven't found him yet, but we can't spend all our time and manpower searching for him with a planet to settle. We've been able to cover more ground with everyone back, but the ship is still pretty huge, and we've barely covered half of it."

"Why not just wait by the furmal hub?" Nepeta asked. "He'll show up eventually, won't he?"

"I'm going to go make sure nothing's spontaniously combusting," Karkat said abruptly. "Just come out when you're done, we could really use your help," Aradia nodded before he turned on his feet and left. Aradia kept quiet a moment more before explaining further in a softer voice than he'd ever heard from her.

"Sollux... isn't exactly alive," She said, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. "He's not dead, but... half-dead. We don't even know if he needs too eat, much less if he will," She sighed softly, sounding for all the world like a tired lusus. "And it's not like he has the best track record when it comes to taking care of himself,"

"Oh, Aradia..." Nepeta mewled, taking a step closer and giving the girl a hug. She accepted it greatly, and Equius was left standing awkwardly to the side. That's what one felt when their moirail was embracing a former(?) quadrant interest, correct? He really wasn't good with this whole feelings thing.

"You know what? I'll go look right meow! It can't be that hard fur me to find him, especially if I get Terezi! She's the best at finding people with her nose!" And before an objection could be raised, she was running down the hall, calling out for Legislaciating Dragonesses and their honorable aid. They both watched her go for a second or two, before Equius stood to his full height, and cleared his throat easily catching her attention.

"I'm... sure Captor will be fine," He said, a bit hesitant, but patting her shoulder gently. She didn't flinch away, not in the least, and he was astounded by how much control he seemed to have now. He'd have to go practice touching things after... all of this was cleared up. "He cares for you. That enough should deter him from any self-destructive behooviors," He wished he felt half as confident in that statement as he sounded, because as much as he'd tried(He'd been team leader after all), he didn't really know Sollux all that much, so all of his words were just random stabs in the dark. It got her to smile at him, at least.

"You're right," she smiled. "I really should put more faith in him. Thank you," And before he could even comprehend what she was doing, her hand was in his shirt, and he was being tugged down. He didn't know until after that she'd floated off the ground, but that's because the during was filled with her lips on his cheek, and he wasn't really sure how to handle that. They were soft, but it was quick, and when she pulled away and looked at him... he really had no idea what to do. "I have to get back out there," She said after a moment, floating away and pulling up her hood. It was amazing how she fit all her hair in there; it had so much volume. "Sollux or no, there's still work to be done. Let me know if you think you're suffering from any side affects," And with a gently wave of her hand in his direction, she took off, and was gone.

Equius just stood there for a moment, blinking off in the direction she'd left, before a drunken giggle broke him from his contemplations and he remembered that there were others in the room. "Homygay so cuuuties!" Roxy laughed, Rose taking care to hide her smug behind a hand. "An' jus' lo- lookit how fuckin' suave Araida was, ah? Like a mid-earthan knight or something, haha!"

"Yes, Zahhak would make the perfect proverbial princess,"

"mafghug, whacha think their kids'd lok like?"

Equius didn't wait around for them to comment further, taking to the hallway with a brisk walk. Their words hadn't bothered him, not really, he'd heard much worse teasing often enough; what bothered him was the kiss. It wasn't anything special, but she had kissed him before, and way back when... he couldn't help but think that it had meant something. But the one she'd just given him now, the one that was the closest to red he'd ever gotten from her-- which was something he'd actively strived for, even if he now admits he'd been in fierce denial over it-- didn't seem to mean anything. He knew it's intentions, that wasn't the problem, but way back when, it had caused insects to dance within him, had caused him to go jittery.

The kiss he'd just now gotten was just that-- a kiss. No warmth, no spark, nothing. Could his feelings have really waned so much that he hadn't even noticed their decrease? He'd known when he'd first seen Aradia in the dream bubbles that he'd be a bit off about everything since the explosion-- he'd been really hun up on the fact that he hadn't said goodbye-- but had the emotions disappeared all together?

No, that can't be right. He shook his head to clear it out; everything was so jumbled. He really needed to talk about all of it, but his moirail had run off, and he was pretty sure that he wouldn't be able to find her until someone else found him lost within the confines of the ship hours in the future. What would Nepeta ask him? Well that was simple, and as good a place to start as any.

Alright, let's start our with purr fact: How do you feel about Aradia?

It's complicated was the best he could come up with. Because he cared for her, he did, but... he didn't think it was as strong as it used to be. But it didn't think it had changed, either. Perhaps it had been all in his head? He still admired the elegance and grace she held herself with, but it was just that-- admiration. Now that he thought about it, had it always just been admiration? Had he fooled himself to believe he'd fallen for her?

But why would you do that? Mind!Nepeta asked, and he shrugged. How was he supposed to know why his younger self decided to make a mountain out of a groundbeast hill? Well there has to be some reason. she said, a bit exasperated as he turned a corner. Purrhaps there was something around Aradia that you liked?

No, that was preposterous. There was nothing particularly around her but lowbloods, and he'd never been keen on them. Well, at least not at 6 sweeps. He'd be the first to admit that he still had his prejudices, but he was getting better. There wasn't any specific material item she possessed that he longed for, so that was out as well. Which just left the admiration. Had it all just been a trick of the mind?

Go back to the lower castes, Mind!Nepeta interjected. Describe them to me.

But why? He'd always ask. It didn't matter what her reason, the odder things she asked usually got him to a conclusion the fastest.

He took a breath as he thought about the trolls Aradia hung out with often, both before and after her death. He immediately thought of the flarping sessions that had led to Tavros's need of his mechanical prowess. Terezi and Vriska were out, they weren't exactly low on the hemospectrum. Tavros was his best bet, because the two certainly hung out a lot, spent a fair amount of time together before his accident, and after she'd taken his soulbot as her own, she hadn't really conferred with... well, anyone.

What about Sollux? Mind!Nepeta pointed out, and he had to purse his lips because he'd been avoiding Sollux as an answer, and he wasn't exactly sure why. He had had a heavy influence on Aradia though, enough so that she'd decided to say goodbye to him out of everyone before she exploded. Not only that, but hadn't they both worked on excavating S'Grub from the ruins in the first place?

Sollux had certainly been a handful during the game. He'd never listened to orders, or threats, and he definitely seemed to hold some sort of grudge with Equius. Though now that he thought about it, Aradia had more than likely been the direct cause of that-- Sollux had probably seen him as competition, and, if Equius was to believe all the talk of the yellowblood's self-loathing habits, didn't even think he he had a chance.

But that wasn't entirely true; He knew Aradia, for one thing. He didn't have hookups about the caste-system, he knew how to make her laugh. It was sarcasm, and snark, and sass, but all of that could be entertaining, given the chance, and could be rather endearing, in its own light. He was also pretty intelligent, and even back during the game Equius had begrudgingly acknowledged his prowess with all things software.

To think that he was missing at this moment... it hurt him. It made him ache over the mere notion that he was sitting with himself, ignoring any dietary needs he may possess and just... he wasn't even sure what Sollux did on his own, but it didn't help his blood-pusher any with it's constriction problem. It almost felt like he was 6 sweeps again, building Aradia's soulbot with the utmost precision, back when he hadn't really known the difference between caste-driven hatred and... pi... ty...

He stopped, his eyes wide, his hand coming up to cover his mouth as he tried not to stumble through the steel walls of the ship. He caused a bit of a dent, but it was the least of his worries at the moment. What was on his list of worries, way high up there at the tip top, was Sollux. He pitied Sollux, and if he thought back far enough, it wasn't that hard a stretch to sat that placing Aradia in a quadrant may have possibly been an unconscious call for the yellowblooded hacker genius to notice him. His problem was that he pitied Sollux Captor.

He pitied Sollux Captor, and no one had seen him in over a month.
